The garbage management in the city received a setback on Tuesday with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) informing the Delhi High Court that it does not have vacant land to provide South Delhi Municipal Corporation for a new landfill site.
The only landfill under South DMC at Okhla is saturated and the corporation recently denied permission to Public Works Department of Delhi to dump silt at Okhla, that it had removed from drains as part of pre-monsoon preparations.
‘DDA first submitted in the court that it had no responsibility to provide land for the project.
When the court pulled it up, DDA officers said that they don’t have the required land in the city.
The court has constituted a committee headed by union environment secretary to find a proper land and allot it to South DMC,’ said Subhash Arya, leader of house in South DMC.
Three municipal commissioners, along with Delhi chief secretary of DDA, will be the members of the committee.
The corporation had demanded around 500 acres of land at a suitable place in the city for municipal waste disposal, but when DDA refused on the ground that it didn’t have available land, the civic body approached the court.
