No traffic pangs during Obama visit but avoid New Delhi area, says Bassi

According to a senior official of Delhi Traffic Police, many roads in the New Delhi district will be blocked on January 21 — the day of the first full-dress rehearsal for the Republic Day parade. It shall remain open only on January 26 after Obama, the chief guest at the Republic Day celebration this year, departs.

According to a source, the US President can arrive in the city either on January 24 evening or January 25 evening. His stay has been arranged at the ITC Maurya Sheraton hotel on Sardar Patel Marg. Around one kilometre stretch on the Sardar Patel Marg in front of the hotel will be blocked and vehicles to and from Dhaula Kuan will be diverted through Saint Martin Marg, Manas Marg and Panchsheel Marg.

However, Obama arriving during the weekends will prove to be a relief for both the commuters and the authorities from witnessing pangs of weekday traffic hassles. “We have also been informed that Barack Obama may visit three places in particular, which includes the Rajghat, Rashtrapati Bhawan and the US Embassy. Traffic in these routes will have to be cleared accordingly,” said a senior official of Delhi Traffic Police.

He further added that if the first lady, Michelle Obama, takes a detour, she shall have a different convoy and urgent traffic arrangements will have to be made.

In their previous visit, Michelle Obama went to the Crafts Museum at Pragati Maidan and immediate traffic arrangements had to be provided. Roads had to be cleared for their earlier visit to the Humayun’s tomb too.

“However, commuters in New Delhi may have a more harrowing experience on January 21 and 23, when major links to the C-Hexagon in India Gate will be blocked for the Republic Day parade rehearsals. Traffic advisory regarding that will be issued in a few days,” the senior official informed.
