No teachers for DU computer science students

Computer science students in Delhi University (DU) are suffering because of a shortage of NET-qualified teachers in the department. Shortage of staff has begun affecting regular classes for the more than 10,000 students pursuing the subject at the university.

DU officials have admitted that the department needs another 160 teaching staff for the 16 colleges teaching computer science. The university is also having trouble following the University Grants Commission guidelines for teaching because of shortage of staff.

There are sixteen colleges under Delhi University which urgently need qualified computer science teachers. This includes renowned colleges like Kirori Mal College, Keshav Mahavidhyalaya College, Ramjas College, Hansraj College, Shivaji college, Indraprastha College for Women, Acharya Narendra Dev College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Bhaskraycharya College, College of Vocational Studies, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, Kalindi College, P.G.D.A.V. College, Ram Lal Anand College, Shaheed Rajguru College , Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College and Sri Guru Gobind Singh College.

Harmeet Kaur, HOD of computer science in Hansraj College said that 'the administrative authorities in many colleges have not recognised computer science as a subject in their college because of the shortage of teachers. I don't understand why the NET has become such a big challenge today. Either NET has become extremely difficult to crack or the papers are not being checked properly.' 'This time UGC has also made the syllabus easier simply to make up for the shortage of computer science teachers in DU,' Kaur added.

A DU official said that most of the teachers who are are working in DU are qualified and have enough experience in their respective fields, but a few of them are not NET-qualified. 'Only 10 computer science teachers have cleared the NET exams in the past three years and only three cleared them last year. Six teachers are teaching more than 450 computer science students in Hansraj College,' he said.
