No probe in mishandling of MP’s body

The blame game continues between the Police Headquarter and district police regarding the inquiry that is to be carried out in MP Brij Bhushan Tiwari’s death. Tiwari died on 25 April due to a heart attack, but many claim his body was handled in a careless way by the Delhi Police.

The incident was brought in the notice of Parliament by MP Mohan Singh. Even Rajeev Shukla, Minister of State, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, said, ‘We shall not only make the Home Minister aware of it but also make efforts to take stern action against the persons found guilty.’

Later in the Parliament, P Chidambram asked the police to probe the matter immediately. No inquiry, however, has been started as yet.

When Millennium Post contacted Rajan Bhagat, spokesperson of Delhi Police, about the status of the inquiry, he said, ‘The information must be with the North-West district. Kindly contact them. I am unaware about the status.’

When Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police [North-West] was contacted, he said, ‘We are not looking into the matter. Officials at Police Headquarter must be aware about the update.’

A PCR call was made by his home guard when he suffered from the heart attack. He was taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. After that , the body was dumped in the mortuary with a tag of ‘unclaimed body’. His family was very upset. ‘He is an MP after all. And if they don’t know who was he, how did they contact us? This is pure carelessness. We want justice.’ said one of the the family members.

On 25 April, when UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, along with SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav reached the hospital, even they had to wait for hours to claim the body.

The post mortem report said the cause of Tiwari’s death was natural and there was no foul play involved.
