No new meds to combat drug resistant super bugs

The international conference on Anti-microbial resistance and novel drug development  was inaugurated by lighting the traditional lamp by Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Y S Chowdary; Dr T R Paari Vendhar, Founder Chancellor; S Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor of SRM University;  S P Thyagrajan, former Vice-Chancellor of Madras University; Simon Croft, LSHTM, UK, Dr G J Samathanam, director research and chairman of organising committee and Dr V Samuel Raj, organising secretary .

Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) were signed between SRM University, Haryana and University of Pennsylvania, USA and Chiba University, Japan and Daiichi Sankyo, India and the documents were exchanged in the presence of dignitaries.

The Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Y S Chowdary emphasised upon the coupling of India’s ancient medical science such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani with the modern medicine for tackling challenges in the health sector. He further said that Government of India considers the subject of anti-microbial resistant drugs a priority, where there is need for R & D companies and Universities to work together. He assured the Indian Government commitment to scale up the investment in R & D from the present one per cent of GDP to two per cent in the coming years. He also encouraged youngsters to come forward to participate in R & D in nation building.
