No need for separate exam for IPS: Govt

The government on Tuesday told the Parliament that a separate examination for recruiting IPS officers was not required as the current practice of recruitment through the Civil services, was fine.

‘The UPSC have stated that based on reports of various committees on reforms in the Civil Services Examination, there is no need for a separate programme for the selection of IPS officers de-linking it from the Civil Services Examination. Keeping in view the feedback from states/UTs and the UPSC, a separate examination for IPS officers is not desirable,’ minister of state for home RPN Singh told Lok Sabha in a written reply on Tuesday.

The 161st Report on Demands for Grants (2012-13) made a recommendation for exploring the possibility of conducting a separate examination for IPS were the attitude and aptitude of the candidate must be thoroughly tested, besides their mental makeup and inclination for policing.
