No let-up in heat, mercury crosses 450 C in parts of Delhi

 “The Palam observatory registered a maximum temperature of 45.6 degrees Celsius,” said a MeT official. 

The Safdarjung observatory, whose reading is considered as the official figure for the city, recorded a maximum temperature of 42.7 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season’s average. On 18 May, the Palam observatory registered a high of 46.4 degrees Celsius, which is the highest so far this season. Minimum temperature was recorded at 28.8 degree Celsius which was two notches above the season’s average, the official said. The humidity level oscillated between 68 percent and 37 percent.

In what may come as a relief, the MeT office has indicated the possibility of rain and thunder storm towards Monday evening and night. “The sky will be partly cloudy. Rain and thunder storm may occur in some areas towards evening and night tomorrow (Monday),” the MeT forecast said. According to the weather man, the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 43 degree Celsius and 29 degree Celsius respectively.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 41.6 degrees Celsius while the minimum had settled at 30.7 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, there was no let-up in the heat wave conditions that have gripped large parts of the country with mercury rising to 47 degrees Celsius in Hisar in Haryana and Churu in Rajasthan on Sunday. Hisar sizzled at 47.5 degrees while Churu recorded a maximum temperature of 47 degees Celsius, the MeT Department said.

The temperatures hovered around 45 degrees in many places in Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, making lives miserable for people. The temperatures ranged between 42 and 46 degrees Celsius in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rohtak and Bhiwani in Haryana. Heat wave conditions also persisted in Punjab with Amritsar recording a high of 41.5 degress Celsius, two degrees above normal.

Union Territory Chandigarh registered a maximum of 39.6 degrees Celsius. Sriganganagar, Pilani and Kota in Rajasthan recorded a maximum of 46, 45.5 and 45 degree Celsius respectively whereas the day temperature in Bikaner, Jaipur and Jodhpur was 44.8, 44.2 and 40.9 degrees, according to MeT department here.
