Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is yet to receive a formal invitation for the swearing in ceremony of Pakistan’s PM-in-waiting Nawaz Sharif, MEA said on Tuesday.
Refuting the earlier media reports that said that the PM was not likely to attend Sharif’s invitation, the PMO office also has clarified that there is no official invitation sent from Nawaz Sharif to the PM yet.
Though PM’s presence at Nawaz Sharif’s swearing-in ceremony might seem doubtful, Pakistan’s would-be PM himself has accepted Manmohan Singh’s request to come to India, a news channel reported.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)leader Nawaz Sharif, who is all set to be crowned the Prime minister of Pakistan for the third time, had yesterday invited Indian PM Manmohan Singh to his oath taking ceremony, as well as to Pakistan.
Nawaz’s invite was in turn, prompted by an unusually quick congratulation by Manmohan Singh after the PML-N leader’s overwhelming win in Pakistan polls.
Even before the official results of Pakistan elections were out, PM Manmohan Singh had written a letter to Nawaz Sharif, addressing him as ‘Dear Mian Saheb’ and congratulating him for the victory and also inviting him to India.
BJP HOPES SHARIF’S DESIRE FOR BETTER TIES IS NOT HIJACKED
Striking a note of caution optimism, BJP today described as a ‘positive sign’ Nawaz Sharif's statements on rebuilding ties with India and hoped his overtures are not hijacked by ‘vested interests’.
‘The democratic transition of government in Pakistan is a welcome development. BJP congratulates Nawaz Sharif on his historic electoral victory. Sharif's statements on rebuilding relations with India are a positive sign,’ BJP chief Rajnath Singh said in a statement. On Sharif's statement on improving relations with India, he said, ‘Since Sharif has publicly stated that he would pick up the pieces of 1999 peace process, we hope that the agenda for peace and stability in the region is not hijacked by vested interests operating from Pakistan.’
