There would be no hike in rail passenger fares. Not in the immediate future at least, as the government doesn’t want protests before 2014 polls.
Addressing the media in Rail Bhawan on Wednesday afternoon, rail minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said he was still getting ‘acclimatised’ to the new ministry’s workings. ‘There is a need to do something about it (fare hike). But there are many reasons for not being able to do it (hike the fare),’ he said.
Bansal said ‘the ratio of passenger fare to freight is 0.3 to 1 in India. In China it is 1.3 to 1. So you can imagine how our fare is less.’ The minister also said there was a proposal for setting up a rail tariff regulatory authority.
