No divide and rule: Modi says he won’t allow Maha split

Fearing adverse results in the Maharashtra assembly elections following allegations made by friend-turned-foe Shiv Sena that BJP had a hidden agenda to create a separate state of Vidarbha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that he would not allow the state to be divided. BJP is locked in a four cornered fight in the assembly polls scheduled to take place on 15 October.

For the last few weeks leaders of Shiv Sena, NCP, Congress and others were targeting BJP by claiming that their presence in the state would be a disaster as they have an agenda to create a new state of Vidarbha out of Maharashtra. They have also raised the issues of NDA’s decision to shift some of the crucial wings of RBI to the national capital, which would make Mumbai lose its claim as financial capital of the country.

There are reports that Modi himself expressed his annoyance over some of the BJP leaders for making such statements (on Vidarbha), which has touched the sentiments of the people in other parts of Maharashtra. He warned them not to make such statements considering the importance of winning the assembly poll in Maharashtra. The issue of separate state started had gained momentum before the Lok Sabha election when some of the BJP leaders went on record that NDA will consider the demand of Vidarbha.

Modi while addressing a rally at Dhule said, ‘After cotton and onion they started another lie saying Maharashtra will be divided. Is there anyone born who can divide Chhatrapati Shivaji’s Maharashtra? India is incomplete without Mumbai and Maharashtra. Till I am in Delhi I assure you no power will be able to break Maharashtra.’ Modi’s remarks came after MNS chief Raj Thackeray accused him of having a ‘hidden agenda’ to split Mumbai from Maharashtra.

While hitting at the Congress and NCP, he said, ‘Unlike Congress, we are not the ones to make false promises. The Congress-NCP government destroyed an entire generation in Maharashtra in the last 15 years. Wait for 15 October. As soon as BJP government comes to power, we will rectify the damage done to cotton and onion growers due to the wrong policies of the erstwhile Congress and NCP government,’ he said.
