No Delhi teams in key Maharashtra onion markets: Chavan

Delhi government has not stationed teams in key mandies of Maharashtra for aggressively buying the commodity as has been done by Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Monday.

Chavan’s remarks assume significance as they have come at a time when price of onion is becoming a big issue with the approaching of polls in the national capital.

The chief minister said onion prices are easing now and expressed apprehensions that soon there will be a ‘reverse crisis’ of steep fall in prices hitting the growers.

He denied claims that there have been cartels operating in ‘mandies’ of the state which are instrumental in keeping the prices of the onions high.

Maharashtra, he said, was against tampering with the import-export regime for onions by imposing physical restrictions. Such knee jerk reactions will hurt the farmer, he said.
