Despite all the measures taken by the city government, the dengue menace continues unabated in Delhi. Many cases are being reported daily and the actual figures may be much more. The hospitals are crowded with victims of the disease. Over the last few weeks hundreds of persons have been infected. However, there is hardly any information in the public domain about how this government is handling the crisis in the city. That the disease has struck again is a bit of a surprise. The disease has become a yearly menace. In the previous years, the city government had claimed that it had taken many steps in the city to clear it of the infection. Quite obviously, these have been inadequate to curb the menace. The public had expected that the measures taken by the government would be permanent. That this has not happened is surprising.
The disease does not occur if drains are maintained properly which the city government claims to have cleaned each year. So obviously, the city government has not done a good job. It should have had the drains cleaned properly so that mosquitos did not breed. It was as simple as that. The government has a budget for this purpose. If the elimination of mosquitos had been done properly then dengue wouldn’t have spread. So where have all the funds vanished? The government is expected to be more vigilent when it comes to such seasonal epidemics. Earlier, governments used to not only take preventive steps but also warn the public about the disease. It is surprising that the government does not appear concerned about the menace. There are hardly any public announcements or advertisements in newspapers and other publications warning the public about the disease or even about the steps it has taken to ameliorate the menace. Should not the government have informed the public about how best to protect themselves of the disease in a better way? The virus is highly contagious and spreads like the common cold and flu. The disease is not hard to contain if proper measures are taken in time. Why has this government been negligent about the health measures that it is supposed to take routinely? What is the purpose of maintaining a huge health budget if even an infection as easy to
prevent as dengue is not contained?
