Nitish says Third Front possible in future

‘We have a common cause. We are talking...though it is early to talk about the formation of a front, but it could take shape in future,’ said Kumar, while referring to West Bengal and Odisha chief ministers joining hands for the next general elections.

‘Mamata Banerjee’s view is that Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal and Jharkhand have some common problems and we should think about them together. I have also said If all of us understand these problems together and form a common front it would be good.... This is at an initial stage,’ said Kumar. Though it seems that the NDA alliance is heading towards a split, former BJP president Nitin Gadkari and BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi met JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav. This came on a day when Murli Manohar Joshi also called up Nitish Kumar in bid to keep the alliance intact. ‘NDA exists right now and we are taking steps so that the situation can be rectified,’ said Yadav, thus stating that all is not well between the two partners.

BJP sources, however, indicated the situation has worsened between the two parties after Modi’s elevation and a reconciliation between them seems unlikely. The BJP, however, on Thursday reiterated its stand that it would like the alliance to continue, ‘We think that the mandate and aspirations of the people in Bihar need to be honoured and we will work towards it,’ said  BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman. The day also saw the Bihar unit of the BJP holding an emergency meeting to gauge the situation.
