Niti Aayog CEO justifies scrapping of plan panel

Justifying the scrapping of the Planning Commission by Narendra Modi government, a top official here said on Thursday that the key plan panel had outlived its utility and it was inept in handling new economic challenges.

Former secretary of Planning Commission and currently the Chief Executive Officer of Niti Aayog, Sindhushree Khullar said: “The Planning Commission did not deliver the task assigned to it  and took additional task which it was not meant to perform.” She was addressing the Shri Ram Economics Summit conducted by The Economics Society of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). The Niti Aayog came into existence with the concept of ‘Team India’, she added.

“There are many states which are performing well. We want the state governments to pull up the Centre to perform better,” said Khullar. She added that dissolving the Planning Commission was not sudden. “The need to change was being felt for quite a while. With the new demands, and new challenges, the change was required.”

Answering the scepticism about the land acquisition ordinance, Khullar explained that rehabilitation and compensation schemes have not been touched upon. While lighting up the mood of the audience, Khullar joked and said: “I thought when I would be the CEO, I would get a personal jet. I thought that is what the CEOs are supposed to get.” It was also attended by Deepak Nayyar (ex-chief economic advisor), Nirmala Sitharaman (Minister of State for Commerce and Industry) and other leaders.
