Nirbhaya’s father, who also took part in the candle-light vigil complained “nothing has changed in the past two years”
They say Narendra Modi is fearless. Will he help us get justice” asked Nirbhaya’s father as he fought back tears while remembering his daughter whose brutal rape and murder two years ago shook the nation’s conscience. Referring to the recent incident where a finance executive was raped by an Uber cab driver, the father said, “Nothing has changed since December 16, 2012. All promises and statements made by our leaders and ministers have turned out to be shallow. Our suffering gives them their moment in limelight.”
The four accused Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh were tried by a fast-track court which awarded them death penalty on September 13, 2013. However, the Delhi High Court upheld the death penalty in March this year. Now the family is waiting for the apex court hearing on the convicts’ appeal. “What is holding the authorities from hanging those rapists and murderers when all the evidence are in place”, the aggrieved father asked.
He also expressed his wish to meet Prime Minister Narendra and request him for speedy justice.
A programmed named ‘Being Nirbhaya’ was organised at Jantar Mantar on Monday. The programme began with a set of street plays around 5 pm, which was followed by a candle light march. The students formed a human chain and marched on the Jantar Mantar road, which was barricaded by the police from both ends.
“Even after the horrific Nirbhaya incident, the rapes and harassment of women continue to happen. In fact it has increased in the recent times”, said a student who participated in the candle march. Similar similar candle light march were also organised inside the JNU campus and areas around the DU campus in the evening.
