NIOS’ workshop to discuss role of open school

An international conference organised by the National Institute of Open Schooling at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses was inaugurated on Wednesday by M M Pallam Raju, Minister of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

R Bhattacharya, secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, MHRD, was the guest of honour. This three-day conference, to be held from 13 – 15 March, will witness keynote addresses by eminent speakers and panel discussions on key issues such as access and equity, vocational education and skill development.

A book titled Framework for Recognition of Prior Learning
was also released on this occasion. The Conference, ‘Education For All: Role of Open Schooling’ opened with a keynote address by Frances Ferreira, education specialist, Commonwealth of Learning.

Sugata Mitra of Newcastle University in UK talked about the future of learning.

Raju, in his inaugural address, said education is the most potent tool for socio-economic equity and of prime concern today. He also added that the conference would provide a further impetus in thinking up of strategies to reach the unreached.

Bhattacharya urged the participants to discuss and deliberate on enhancing opportunities being provided by the open schooling system.

Experts from India and abroad, educational planners, policy makers, administrators as well as representatives of open schools are expected to participate in this three-day conference.
