Nine killed, over 10 injured as bus catches fire in Amethi

Nine persons were killed, while over 10 were injured when a roadways bus caught fire in Peeparpur area near Amethi on Tuesday morning, police said.
The bus going from Faizabad to Allahabad caught fire near Ramgaon village, 150 km from Lucknow, said Superintendent of Police Heera Lal. He said 42 passengers were on board. Many escaped by smashing window panes of the bus. The SP said efforts were being made to identify the victims as their bodies were charred beyond recognition. He said the injured were admitted to hospitals in Sultanpur and Pratapgarh. Lal said the fire was suspected to have been caused by a short-circuit in the engine.
UPSRTC MD Mukesh Meshram said whether the incident occurred due to short-circuit or was triggered by leakage in an LPG cylinder could be ascertained only after a thorough inquiry. The bus was carrying an LPG cylinder.
Rahul Gandhi condoles death
Congress vice-president and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi has condoled the death of nine persons in a bus accident in his constituency. “I express my condolences to the grieving families. Congress workers are contributing to relief measures. I hope the administration provides all possible assistance to the victims."
