Nine held for teen’s death in WWE-style fight

Seven men were on Thursday arrested and two juveniles apprehended in connection with the death of a 17-year-old student, who was killed in Old City allegedly in a mock street-fight with another youth on May 3, police said.

Mohd <g data-gr-id="32">Awaiz</g> alias Owais Patel and six others – some of them students – were arrested on Thursday, while the two juvenile boys were apprehended in connection with the killing of Nabil Mohammed, DCP (South Zone) V Satyanarayana said. According to the police, the youths, including the deceased, were all friends. Owais allegedly tried to dominate his friends all the time.

On the day of the incident, the group of friends gathered in the <g data-gr-id="33">Panjesha</g> area and Owais had a fight with two other youths, which they were  defeated. On the instigation of Omer Baig and others, Owais and Nabil were ready to fight, the DCP said.

During the “friendly” fight which was <g data-gr-id="34">videographed</g>, Owais attacked and punched Nabil on his body and particularly on his head, following which Nabil collapsed and died, the senior police officer said. The friends then got Nabil shifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead, he said.

To conceal the facts, all of them concocted a story on the instigation of Omer Baig that Nabil died in a motorbike <g data-gr-id="28">accident,</g> while doing stunts. Believing the version of the accused, Nabil’s family buried his body, police said.

Later, Nabil’s father became suspicious and lodged a police complaint. A case of suspicious death was registered. In the meanwhile, the video footage recorded on a mobile phone by one of the youths went viral on social media and was also flashed on TV news channels.

On May 11, Nabil’s body was exhumed and a post-mortem was conducted. Based on <g data-gr-id="25">preliminary</g> report, it was revealed that Nabil’s body had multiple injuries, the DCP said.
