When Ibifubara Godwill William Jumbo, a Nigerian student, landed in the Delhi International Airport on Monday, he could never have imagined that he would have to shell out Rs 6,000 as a taxi fare to cover a distance of only 14 kms to reach his institution at Moti Nagar in South Delhi.
With the notion of ‘Atithidevo bhava’ creating much hype in India with Bollywood star Aamir Khan being the face of the ad, Jumbo did not even anticipate that he would walk into this trap. He boarded a cab arranged by a conman at the airport and before he knew, he was already in trouble.
Trouble started when he walked out of the airport and was desperately looking for a cab — the one which he had arranged for prior to his landing from the plane from Qatar. When he could not locate the driver, he came out of the airport and requested a man, who later proved to be a conman, for his mobile phone to make a call. ‘The caller, instead of asking Jumbo for his driver’s number, called up his associate who was waiting nearly half a kilometre away from the airport,’ said a cop.
The conman’s friend came and projected himself to be Jumbo’s driver, made an excuse that his cab had broken down and Jumbo should board another taxi. He asked Jumbo to pay him $100 (Rs 6,000) and also confirmed that he will get the refund after they reached Jumbo’s institution. This driver then took him to a place which was approximately 30 minutes from the IGI and asked him to board a white Toyota Etios waiting there.
Jumbo in his complaint also mentioned that ‘the driver of the taxi was already aware of my destination which was Moti Nagar. I had paid a fare of $100 to the person who originally met me at the airport and I also noticed that he did not give any money to the taxi driver at the time I was boarding the cab. After reaching my institution, I realised that I have been cheated by this taxi driver and his friend.’
Meanwhile, one of the institution officials said that there is a gang of such taxi drivers operating at the IGI airport who target African students on a regular basis. The group has already cheated as many as 15 students in a similar manner.
A case under Sections of 419/420/34 IPC & 4(c) of Delhi Prevention of Touting and Malpractice against Tourists Ordinance Act, 2010, has been registered, said the police.
