NHRC notice to Maha over inmate’s death

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a show-cause notice to the Maharashtra government, asking why a monetary relief of Rs 5 lakh should not be paid to the family of Manoj Shivnath Salve (20), who died in police custody due to torture on October 26, 2013.
NHRC member Justice D Murugesan has asked DCP. Crime Branch, Andheri (East), to submit a report on the final outcome of a departmental inquiry against four police personnel, who allegedly assaulted Salve, within six weeks.
Following Salve’s death, the policemen were suspended and arrested. A charge-sheet was also filed against them. The NHRC has also given the state Chief Secretary six weeks to respond. It said Salve might <g data-gr-id="16">gave</g> died due to police torture as his autopsy report revealed that there were 56 external injury marks on his body.
