NHRC issues notice to govt over unfinished hospitals

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports about two super speciality hospitals which are still not operational even after 16 years the projects were announced by earstwhile Delhi government.

The NHRC has issued a notice to Delhi government, calling for detailed report on the matter within four weeks.

The hospitals — Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital (600 bedded) in East Delhi and Janakpuri Super Speciality Hospital (300 bedded) in West Delhi, constructed at a cost of over Rs 150 crore had been mentioned in the state budget by the successive governments for 15 straight years till 2013.

‘If the contents of the media reports are true, it raises a serious issue of violation of human rights and wastage of public money due to indecisiveness of the public servants’, read the statement from commission.

Reportedly, in Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital, except for one corner of the building, where dialysis services is being run on (PPP) Public-Private Partnership mode, medical gas pipeline is yet to be installed.

While at Janakpuri Hospital, OPD services is being run from few rooms. There is no specialist doctor in the hospital except for the director.

The media reports has also alleged that crores of rupees were allocated in the budget for these hospitals during the year 2011-2012 but the amount spent on patient care was meager.

Irregularities were also found in the quantity of medicines shown in the distribution register as well as in the purchase and use of equipment.
