NHRC celebrates its 21st Foundation Day

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC is celebrating its 21st Foundation Day on Saturday. It was on this day in 1993, the NHRC was set up under the Protection of Human Rights Act passed by Parliament.

Since its inception, the Commission has registered more than 12.85 lakh cases of human rights violations either suo motu or on complaints or on intimation by the prison and police authorities. Out of this, more than 12.59 lakh cases have been disposed of.

The top ten states from where the NHRC has so far registered maximum complaints of human rights violations are Uttar Pradesh (approx. 7.14 lakh), Delhi (approx. 85,000), Bihar (approx. 65,800), Haryana (approx. 56,000), Rajasthan (approx. 43,000), Madhya Pradesh (approx. 40,500), Uttarakhand (approx. 31,000), Tamil Nadu (approx. 29,000) and Odisha (approx. 25,000).
