‘NGO’ dupes people of lakhs, two arrested

Two men have been arrested for duping several people on the pretext of allotting them agencies for sale of household items. The racket was being run for the last four months and Rs 33 lakh have been seized from their bank account. ‘The accused, Naved Chaudhary, 37, and Tanseer Ahmed, 40, of Chandni Mahal area were arrested for cheating several people on the pretext of allotting them agencies for sale of household items,’ said Devesh Chandra Srivastva, additional commissioner of police [Central].
On 4 October, a PCR call was received at Chandni Mahal police station that a thief has been caught at Vardhman Plaza at Asaf Ali Road in Chandni Mahal, Delhi. A team that was rushed to the spot found that an NGO, India Fire, had taken an office on rent four days ago at the Plaza.
During the course of enquiry, it came to the notice that the NGO had given an advertisement in newspapers offering agencies for distribution of wheat flour and other household items. The items were branded as Rahat Yogna brand and it was claimed that these items would be available on a much cheaper rates than the prevailing market rates.
Later, 35 more people who had been cheated by the NGO approached the police station, claiming they gave Rs one lakh each to the chairman of the NGO, Naved Chaudhary, to start their own agencies.
The accused disclosed that he had earlier started a business under the name of Citizen Foundation Bazar a few years ago by giving an advertisement in the leading dailies. He, along with his brother, Tanseer Ahmed started this NGO and called upon the people to invest in it. The police later arrested Ahmed.
