New York gunman kills 2, injures 8

A ‘disgruntled’ sacked employee gunned down his ex-colleague and then randomly opened fire on the crowded sidewalks outside the iconic Empire State Building here today, the third such incident in the US in nearly one month.
‘The shooter, who was one of the two killed, was shot dead by police,’ a New York Police Department spokesperson told PTI.
‘Nine people were injured in the shooting incident,’ the spokesperson said.
‘The shooter has been identified as a 53-year-old Jeffrey Johnson,’ New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters at the crime scene outside the Empire State Building, also a popular tourist destination.
Bloomberg said that the shooter was a ‘disgruntled’ worker who had been fired from his job at a women’s apparel company, a year ago.
‘Some of the injured may have been accidentally shot by the police officers who were responding to the shooting and confronting the suspect,’ Bloomberg said.
He showed up at the office of the apparel company a little after 9 am (local time) this morning, he said.
The gunman got into a dispute with his ex-colleague and he shot and killed him at close range.
The victim was only identified as a 41-year-old man. The name of the victim was not revealed pending notification of the family.
‘The shooter had a .45 caliber pistol,’ New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
‘Nine people were injured in the shooting incident, and all are expected to survive,’ he said.
After shooting his former co-worker the gunman walked out to the street where he was confronted by the police officers. The gunman pulled out his pistol and fired at the police officers but was killed in the return fire.
‘He was killed by the return firing of the police officers,’ Bloomberg said.
