New UP in-charge Amit Shah to lead BJP agitation in Rampur

The newly-appointed BJP in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Amit Shah is slated for a showdown with the ruling Samajwadi Party Government in Rampur, the hometown of urban development minister Mohammad Azam Khan, where he will stage an anti-government protest on 29 May.

Shah will court arrest on that day along with other senior BJP leaders to protest anti-people policies of the state government. The focus of the protest would be deterioration in law and order and Muslim appeasement policies adopted by the Samajwadi Party government, a senior party functionary said.

BJP state presdent Laxmi Kant Bajpai confirmed Shah’s 29 May visit to Uttar Pradesh and said that the new UP in-charge would certainly invigorate the party cadre that in turn would give a boost to the party’s prospects in the coming Lok Sabha elections. Three days later BJP national president Rajnath Singh will court arrest in Lucknow on 2 June. The UP BJP has announced a ‘jail bharo’ programme between 27 May and 2 June against the state government.

Selecting Rampur as the arena to launch Shah in UP politics could be a ploy for the BJP to take Khan head-on. This move could polarize Hindu-Muslim votes and in turn could boost the prospects of Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, who is the BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Rampur. It will be now be a showdown between Naqvi and Khan.
