The number of automobiles plying on the streets of the national capital has gone up phenomenally in the past few years, resulting in traffic congestion. In order to cut down on the travel time in the city, express corridors have been planned by the Delhi government. On Tuesday, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit will lay down the foundation stone of a parallel road connecting Sanjay Gandhi Transportation Nagar to Wazirabad Chowk.
Feasibility studies were carried out by the public works development(PWD). Existing roads connecting this stretch have a number of intersections which always remain chocked due to heavy traffic on the Outer Ring Road,’ said a PWD official.
The scheme involves building a new parallel road on the other side of the supplementary drain along the Outer Ring Road, which will open up another high speed six lane concrete paved road connecting to colonies such as Swaroop Nagar, Bhalaswa Village, Mukundpur Village, Burari Village,Jagatpur Village and Wazirabad Village besides providing relief from perennial traffic congestion to roads linking these villages to the Outer Ring Road.
The proposed parallel road will reduce up to 40 per cent of traffic on the Outer Ring Road, thereby ensuring fast, signal-free connectivity on the Outer Ring Road.
The project was approved by the United Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Centre (UTTIPEC), chaired by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi in 2009, but was cleared by the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) in December 2011.
The new corridor will also help decongest heavy traffic moving from Chandigarh, Sonipat and Karnal Side on National-Highway(NH-1) to Mukarba Chowk, by offering an alternative route for movement towards Wazirabad Chowk and further.
