Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma, who seems to be sidelining mediapersons from the day he took over the post, is now focusing on the traffic unit of Delhi Police. But he failed to get the official Delhi Traffic Police website functional.
On Wednesday, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Taj Hassan, who has been appointed as
Chief Spokesperson of Delhi Police, told the media about the upcoming plans of the police chief. “The CP has emphasised on resolving traffic-related problems such as curbing traffic snarls, challaning the offenders and proper deployment of traffic cops,” said Hassan while briefing mediapersons.
Though Verma has posted 11 tweets, including two re-tweets, since March 1, his last tweet was on Tuesday where he wished good luck to the board examinations aspirants. It seems that Verma is opting for social media to interact with Delhiites but he might have not visited the official website that is facing technical problems in the traffic unit (www.delhitrafficpolice.nic.in).
Even though Hassan ensured that all the senior police officials will be available for media, the officers are not aware themselves whether they are authorised to address mediapersons or not.
Speaking to Millennium Post, a senior police official in the Traffic department, requesting anonymity said: “Yes, for the new CP, traffic department is one of his priorities. Verma wants no congestion on the Delhi roads for which he has asked to deploy maximum number of traffic cops on the roads. These traffic cops have been instructed to be present at every major junction specially during the peak hours, both in the mornings and evenings.”
Separate teams have been formed who will do traffic management in the city and every day the number of complaints related to traffic chaos will be recorded and a monthly report will be marked to the CP. A separate team has also been formed to issue challans to the offenders. The current strength of the Delhi Traffic Police is 5,000 including officers.
