New DU V-C calls academic council meet, sets pending matters in motion

The Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of Delhi University (DU), Yogesh Tyagi, within a few days after taking charge, set the process in motion and called an academic council meeting on Monday to discuss matters ranging from new academic session to course to performance review.

Professor Taygi took over as the V-C last week on Thursday succeeding professor Dinesh Singh whose term ended in October.

“The Academic Council (AC) meeting was pending but ahead of the process initiation for the new academic session it was binary on the V-C to call a meeting,” A K Bhagi an EC member of DU said.

Not only the AC but the University’s Executive Council (EC) meeting is also due as the last meeting was held in October 2015 in the presence of the then V-C professor Dinesh Kumar.

“Discussions ranging from the classroom status to courses for the new session to starting of admission procedure were the central points of the meeting,” Bhagi, said.

“The V-C has assured that the matter related to the AC members and academic issues will be taken care on a priority basis,” Bhagi added.

“The new session, promotion and appointment of teachers, decision on the reservation policy and CBCS are some of the important issues which I hope will be sorted out,” said an AC member.

However, Tyagi’s immediate concern would be to clear the uncertainty over the grading method under the Choice-based Credit System (CBCS). The issues took a backseat with the V-C’s post lying vacant for nearly five months.

Last week after taking charge, Tyagi had said: “I wish to work for the university by taking all stakeholders on board, everybody’s views will be taken before arriving at any decision. I am not saying there will be no mistakes, but rest assured there will be no dishonesty.”
