With Delhi recording the highest voting percentage ever, the New Delhi area witnessed unprecedented rise too. Comprising most prestigious seats of Delhi, the area saw a huge turnout at the polling stations since early morning on Saturday. Ordinary voters as well as prominent personalities including politicians were seen standing in queues to cast their votes. Women and youth voters also came out in sizeable numbers at various polling booths.
The voters, however, preferred not to reveal much but indicated that they would vote for change this time. Meanwhile, polling remained peaceful, barring minor incidents. The area, which is famous for lower voter turn out, showcased a different picture on Saturday. Although, the first two hours witnessed thin presence of voters at polling stations, it gained momentum in later hours. The first hour recorded nearly 5.5 per cent and in the next two hours it recorded more than 18 per cent. With a huge crowd of voters, the poll percentage crossed above 50 per cent till 5 pm and 59 per cent till 6 pm and later it recorded 65 per cent. As the day ended, voting was in full swing at majority of the polling centres.
A major chunk of voters from New Delhi, Malviya Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Delhi Cantt and Patel Nagar constituencies witnessed voting in support of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates while BJP candidates took advantage in Rajendra Nagar, R K Puram, Moti Nagar and Karol Bagh. The voters of Greater Kailash looked divided among Congress and AAP as huge support was reflected in favour of Sharmishtha Mukherjee, daughter of President Pranab Mukherjee. No voter was found supporting None Of The Above (NOTA) option. Inflation, corruption, security of women and over-all development were the key issues for residents of North East district as they lined up in front of polling booths to exercise their franchise.
