New Delhi Assembly seat set to witness clash of titans again

During the 2013 assembly polls, when Kejriwal challenged the three time Chief Minister, all eyes were set on the seat, which the AAP leader finally won with a convincing margin.

AAP nominee and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is again eyeing to retain the seat on the second consecutive term while the BJP is attempting to put a fight by fielding former DU leader Nupur Sharma, a local who claims to enjoy widespread support from the people.

The Congress party has this time fielded heavyweight Delhi leader Kiran Walia, in an attempt to make the fight triangular.

In his bid to woo the electorates in New Delhi seat, Kejriwal is talking about issues such as related to age of retirement as a substantial number of voters are government employees.

BJP candidate Nupur Sharma, on the other hand is raking up issues of development, women security, corruption and shortage of power and water in the VIP areas. The Congress nominee however is seeking vote on development work done by her government between 1998 and 2013 and bonanza given to the government employees by accepting recommendations of Seventh Pay Commission.

As the constituency is known for affluent colonies and dominance of government employees problems of “bijli, paani, sadak aur makaan” are not pressing issues here except for the lone urbanized Pilanji village, a few slum clusters and parts of middle-income settlements like BK Dutt Colony and Karbala.

“Issue related to basic infrastructure has never been witnessed here as most part of the area has already been developed. The issues which will prevail are corruption, inflation, price rise and women security issues here,” said Pranay Singh, a voter of the constituency.

With a population of nearly 2.65 lakh and the voters population at 1.36 lakh, the New Delhi assembly constituency has 40 per cent areas of Sarojini Nagar, 47 per cent Gole Market and 13 per cent of Minto Road. Most of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) areas fall under this constituency.

This segment has 37 per cent government employees, 20 per cent Punjabi, 18 per cent Scheduled Caste, 10 per cent Bania, 10 per cent Brahmin and 1 per cent slum dwellers. The constituency comprises North Block and South Block, Janpath, NDMC areas, South Extension, Lodhi Colony, BK Dutt colony, Safdarjung Enclave, Rouse Avenue, President House, Chitragupta Road, Gole Dakkhana, Connaught Place, Panchkuiyan Road, some parts of Minto road, RBI quarters and Sarojini Nagar.
