A new centre will be established at Dwarka in south west Delhi to organise fairs and conferences, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said on Wednesday.
‘Facilities are there, but they are far short of the requirements of this country considering the fact that India is sustaining and nurturing its traditional art and crafts and also seeking a balance with advanced technologies,’ Sharma said at inauguration of India International Trade Fair (IITF) .
‘Delhi will have a truly global scale integrated convention and exhibition centre (at Pragati Maidan) and another centre is coming up in Dwarka,’ he said.
The government, which had earlier announced to set up an integrated convention and exhibition centre at Pragati Maidan, has now rolled out the implementation plan.
‘We had decided to have an integrated complex in Pragati Maidan... now we have rolled out the implementation plan and Delhi will have a truly global scale integrated convention and exhibition centre...,’ Sharma said.
These convention centres will have state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities with a bigger capacity to accommodate increasing number of visitors and business people.
At present, Pragati Maidan has small convention centers that can accommodate about 750 guests. India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) specialises in organising exhibitions and trade fairs. Talking Foreign Direct Investment in India, Sharma said, the world economy has not recovered after 2008. Therefore, it is imperative for all countries to engage more with each other and access the opportunities.
‘We need to do more, particularly on the investment front, considering the stress that our economy is facing which is primarily an importer of some critical commodities including oil and gas,’ he said. Therefore, by engaging more with the partner countries, India has been able to address the challenges and sustain the growth momentum, the minister added.
