To speed up the work charted out for Yamuna River’s redevelopment in the national Capital, an inter-disciplinary committee — Unified Centre for Rejuvenation of River Yamuna, was set up by the Delhi Development Authority on Monday.
The committee will be headed by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor with chief secretary and DDA’s vice chairman as co-chairpersons.
The committee with the help of the Inland Waterways Authority of India will seek assistance from the Netherlands government for their expertise in river engineering, water resources management and pollution control using advanced sewage treatment technologies.
The Dutch will assist the central government in conducting feasibility study on socioeconomic, financial, technical and environmental viability of cleaning Yamuna River. It will also provide assistance in enhancing the water supply by creating mega reservoirs and recycling of water.
‘Yamuna redevelopment topmost priority for Delhi government. While DJB’s interceptor sewage project shall be able to check 70 per cent of the sewage inflow into the river, other drains also need to be intercepted to keep pollutants at bay from entering the river,’ said Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
The main objective of the committee is to begin the process of cleaning the river, which is being coordinated by DJB (Delhi Jal Board) through its interceptor sewage project, the LG added. ‘The DDA will look after the riverfront development through initiatives such as biodiversity parks, green linkages and recreational spaces. All the other agencies will work to increase the water supply for Delhi, which requires building reservoirs and sharing of water through inter-state coordination’, Jung said.
The main aim of the newly-formed committee is to ensure conservation, protection and rejuvenation of river Yamuna and to promote the development activities along the river.
