New-born turned away for treatment by city hospitals

In a disappointing turn of events on Wednesday, parents of a new-born child were turned away by reputed hospitals in the city, despite the serious nature of the infant's ailment. These hospitals cited a lack of adequate facilities and expertise to treat the condition. The new-born was suffering from a serious congenital disorder called meningomyelocele. Eventually the parents were forced to take their ward to a private hospital in Noida.

Elaborating on the distressing turn of events for Reeta’s family, the child’s uncle, Bhagnarayan Prasad said, ‘It was a torment for us. The child was born in the ESI hospital in Noida with swelling in her backbone. The hospital referred the child to Kalawati Saran Hospital due to lack of resources to treat the child. Kalwati in turn referred the scarcely-breathing, a few-hours old child to RML hospital for treatment. Surprisingly, RML also refused to treat the child and referred it to GB Pant Hospital which later declared that they do not take such cases of children below three months of age.’

Prasad further said that the child was finally sent to Lok Nayak Hospital, where it was diagnosed and admitted. However, citing complications from the surgery, the hospital referred the case back again to GB Pant hospital. Millennium Post is in possession of papers, which cited admittance of the new born in Lok Nayak Hospital. The prescriptions and diagnosis were also mentioned in those papers. ‘There are two such children admitted in this hospital but we don’t have any record for this case. We will take strict action if they were denied surgical treatment,’ said YK Sarin, in-charge of the concerned unit in Lok Nayak Hospital.

On GB Pant’s outright refusal, the child’s flustered uncle took the baby in an auto without an oxygen mask back to ESI Hospital. He says that ESI finally called some private hospitals and an ambulance from Yatharth Hospital, Bhangel, took in the baby at 3 am in the morning.
