A crucial meeting of Nepal's four major political parties to form a national unity government on Wednesday ended inconclusively due to differences among them on key issues, as the deadline given by the President to forge a consensus on the issue expires tomorrow.
The meeting convened on Wednesday at Maoist chief Prachanda's residence was attended by Nepali Congress president Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML chairman Jhalanath Khanal. Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai also had taken part in the meeting. NC Vice President Ram Chandra Paudel told reporters that the meeting made no headway against the existing crisis.
During the meeting, the leaders could not agree on the Prime Ministerial candidate even as Nepali Congress proposed the name of its president Sushil Koirala to lead the consensus government, Nepali Congress sources said. Prachanda suggested that the parties should agree on the contentious issues of the constitution before reaching a consensus on the Prime Ministerial candidate, sources said. The leaders will again sit tomorrow to resolve the issues and reach a consensus on the Prime Ministerial candidate. President Ram Baran Yadav has set tomorrow's deadline to form a national consensus government to break the political deadlock that has been plaguing Nepal for months. President Yadav extended the deadline to form the consensus government by another seven days after the parties failed to reach an agreement last Thursday.
