Neighbour’s kin beats 50-year-old woman with rod in a robbery bid

A 50-year-old woman was severely beaten up with an iron rod by her neighbour’s son-in-law in her apartment at Jagatpuri in east Delhi on Saturday. When the victim cried for help, the accused, who was trying to flee, was caught by some neighbours and handed over to the police.

A call was made to the police control room around 11 am on Saturday by the neighbours of the victim, Gulshan Preet Kaur, who had held the accused, Gurvinder (30), when he was trying to flee the crime scene, said a police official.

The accused – who is the son-in-law of the victim’s neighbour – allegedly barged into the victim’s apartment and hit her on the head with a rod.

The neighbours claim that Gulshan came running out of her flat and cried for help after which Gurvinder was nabbed. The victim was rushed to a hospital at Anand Vihar in East Delhi, and she has got severe injuries on her head and neck, the police said.

According to sources, the victim was alone in the house when the incident happened. Her husband had gone to his shop at Sadar Bazar in Delhi and her elder son had left for Mumbai with his wife to meet her younger son. ‘Gurvinder knew that the woman would be alone that day and so that would be the best time to carry out a robbery and flee,’ said a source. He further said, ‘Gulshan is stated to be out of danger at the moment but she is under observation as she had lost a lot of blood in the attack.’

However, police is not clear about the motive of the crime yet. ‘Investigations are going on but we can’t conclude anything right now,’ said an official. The accused has been detained at the Jagatpuri station. ‘Once the victim giver her statement, we will be able to take further action,’ he added.
