Investigations make it appear like a case of road rage and till Monday evening, three persons – Sanjay Basoya (24), Shakti Basoya (21) and Rajiv (25) – were arrested. The two other accused still remain at large, said a police official.
The victim – Akha Salouni (30), who hails from Manipur – was visiting a friend’s place in south Delhi in the late night-hours by an auto-rickshaw. According to a senior police official, ‘In the mid-way, a white Verna car started honking from behind but the auto-rickshaw driver did not let them overtake. They then stopped the auto-rickshaw, got down from the car and indulged in a heated argument followed by physical assault.’
Meanwhile, a PCR call was received at 3:30 am and the victim was immediately rushed to the hospital by a police team, where he was pronounced as brought dead, said BS Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south). He further stated that police is investigating the issue and CCTV footages obtained from the premises at the vicinity of the crime scene were being monitored.
However, the entire case took a new turn when Kiren Rijiju, Union minister of state for home affairs of India, visited the victim’s sister at the AIIMS trauma centre and said that it seems like the entire incident was pre-planned.
‘If some unfortunate incident has occurred with a north-east person in Delhi, it doesn’t necessarily have to be racial. In this case, nothing can be said right now but I am sure things shall become clear by tomorrow (Tuesday) morning,’ Rijiju added.
Salouni lived with his sister Akha Julie at a single-room apartment at Munirka in south Delhi.
