In one of the steepest hike in surface parking, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has approved time bound parking rates in its area, which will come in effect from July.
As per the new rates approved by NDMC, a person will have to pay Rs 40 for two hours of parking. At the moment it is Rs 10. ‘The minimum charge for parking as per the new tariff is Rs 20 for one hour and maximum is Rs 100 for five hours,’ said A K Mishra, spokesperson of NDMC. ‘The maximum charge of Rs 100 is also applicable for more than five hours,’ added Mishra. At present, the minimum charge is Rs 10 for two hours and Rs 10 for subsequent hour.
The council further clarified that the congestion charges which were proposed by the high committee are not being implemented. Moreover, the NDMC has increased the parking charges only for surface parking. The multilevel parking charges would remain the same. ‘The charges of surface parking are being increased to discourage surface parking and promote multilevel parking in the area. We are also hoping that people will eventually prefer to use public transport system to avoid high parking fee,’ said a senior officer of NDMC.
The NDMC has two automated multilevel parkings in Sarojini Nagar and Baba Kharak Singh Marg, which is not being utilised to its full capacity. DLF, the private concessionaire entrusted with mulitlevel parking, wants the civic agency to help in promoting parking indoors. ‘We will gradually close the surface level parking around Hanuman Mandir. But DLF has to promote the parking,’ said Archna Arora, chairman of NDMC.
Meanwhile, the NDMC’s multilevel parking project at Khan Market and Kali Bari Marg, which was proposed in last year’s budget, remain only in paper as the civic agency is yet to get the land. And the much talked about KG Marg parking project is yet to get clearance from National Monument Authority.
