The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided not to take any conversion charges from stores operating before 1962 in commercial areas enlisted in the Master Plan. Thousands of commercial units in these areas were facing demolition and sealing threat from the civic body due to non-compliance of the Master Plan.
The areas falling in Old Delhi, Karol Bagh and Pahargunj areas were notified under the Master Plan of 1962 — the first Master Plan of Delhi. However, most establishments were not able to submit any evidence of their existence prior to the cut-off year.
The corporation in a major sealing drive in 2007 initiated action against them and asked them to submit proof of running their trade prior to 1962 to seek exemption.
‘Every year the traders has to submit proof of running the trade prior to 1962 to get relief from sealing. They were prone to harassment by corrupt officers of the corporation but now they can run their trade without any fear,’ said Mahender
Nagpal, leader of house in NDMC.
The move is likely to benefit traders around Jama Masjid, Chitli Qabar, Bazar Sitaram, Ajmeri Gate, Chandni Chowk, Lajpat Rai market, among others. ‘Besides these commercial areas, if any trader submits proof of running commercial activity in permitted areas he would be exempted from conversion and parking charge,’ Nagpal added.
