‘NDMC plans to turn its area into a smart zone in 2015’

As New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) covers areas of the national Capital, the need of the hour is to turn every nook and corner a smart one. Cleanliness of roads, safety and security of people especially women, disposal of wastes and ensure inclusive growth of the area are the major tasks at hand on which the council will emphasise in the coming year. Proposals are on cards to change the scenario, says NDMC Chairman Jalaj Shrivastava while chatting up with Anup Verma. Excerpts:

Q. What is the roadmap for making the area smart?
The first major initiative which is on the cards is launching of 6D theatres in the area. The theatres, a computer controlled system fitted at mobile vans, will be placed at parks, markets and public places. Talks are on with foreign agencies and hopefully, the project will materialise before February. Special attention is being given to turn the area in to a solar hub. Initially, government institutions, schools and public places are being considered. Installation of CCTV in most parts will also be ensured for security purposes.

Q. What about waste-to-energy proposals and garbage disposals in the area?

Our main emphasis is to produce energy from waste collected from the NDMC areas. Daily, the council collects 280 tonnes of waste and a certain part goes to a waste-to-energy plant in Okhla but due to age-old technology, we hardly receive two MW energy daily. Now, it has been decided to implement ‘Plasma Gasification’ system for power generation from wastes. Speciality of the system is that it requires only 300 square metre land to install machines for generation of 40 MW power. The council is planning to generate 150 MW power, total demand of non-peak days, through this system as it is not just cheaper but will help in garbage disposal. Pentagon, White House and other major institutions in the United States have installed it and in the Asian sub-continent, NDMC will be the first to implement it.

Q. What is the progress in NDMC’s efforts to abolish dhalao  system?
As we are determined to make the area garbage free, we have introduced door-to-door collection with the help of auto-tippers and rickshaws and the wastes collected through them go directly to the compactors instead of dhalaos. We have implemented this in two out of 14 circles and remaining ones will be covered soon. Once it begins to collect garbage from every nook and corner, we will convert all 200 dhalaos into public toilet conveniences/toilets.

Q. Is there any proposal to make the area wi-fi zone?
In recent days, trend of wi-fi zones are on the rise and even in many places it has been implemented. The NDMC is also planning to install the system through the help of street lights across the region and introduce 4G. We have chalked out a plan for this and if things go well, entire NDMC area will be a wi-fi zone in the near future.

Q. Is there any plan for beggars and drug addicts roaming in the area?
As the area has large number of such elements, we are running improvement shelters for them. In the past one year, we have admitted more than a dozen children who are drug addicts in one of the shelters and have sent lot more to others.  Our emphasis is also to stop them from gathering into the area with the help of law enforcement agencies.

Q. What are your plans to improve the condition of NDMC schools?
Though the council is providing all necessities in its schools, more initiatives are being taken in this regard. We have been planning to install highly advanced machinery that will provide drinking water.
Q. What are your preparations ahead of Barack Obama’s visit?

We all know that the US President will spend most of his time in NDMC areas during his visit. The NDMC is all set to welcome him and manage things accordingly. Till date, we have been instructed by the Centre but we are absolutely prepared from our side. Once we get the instruction, it will take less than a week to make necessary arrangements.
