Reiterating upon their long pending demand of fund release by the Delhi government, the BJP governed Municipal Corporations staged a protest at Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday. The protest was led by mayors, deputy mayors, Standing Committee chairmen for over three hours. Leader of the BJP in Delhi Assembly, Vijendra Gupta joined the dharna before going to the Assembly session, with the assurance of raising the matter in the Assembly.
Mayors of all the three corporations- Yogendra Chandolia, Khushi Ram and Meenakshi, said that the present Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his party speak a lot about Swaraj. Influenced by his proclaimed commitment to Swaraj and Mohalla Sabhas, they met him recently to raise the long pending issues. “Unfortunately we found that the attitude of the state government is more rigid than the earlier regime and this has forced the ruling party in corporations to sit on a Dharna,” they said.
The councillors, after finishing the protest, also held a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung. The municipal leaders were agitated due to the constant holding-up of municipal funds, grants and necessary lawful sanctions by subsequent Delhi Governments since 2007 when BJP came to power in the municipal bodies. The councillors requested the L-G to intervene in the matter and ensure release of municipal funds, grants and other statutory sanctions being with held by subsequent governments including the present one.
