NDMC cleans drains, on paper only

The biggest corporation in the city, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has done some unbelievable things - they have completed their target of de-silting the 1290 drains measuring 1,526 km with the help of just two trucks, 13 suction machines, four JCB and two super-sucker; that too within one and half months. What's more its had to share the super-sucker with the South Delhi corporation.

The NDMC has under its jurisdiction the biggest area, among all the corporations, divided in to six zones and 104 wards. Its counterpart South Delhi has four zones while East Delhi has only two zones. 'It's impossible. They have cleaned the drains and nallas only on paper. There is acute shortage of sanitation workers, cleaners (nala-beldar) and mechanics in each ward,' said Mukesh Goel, leader of opposition in the NDMC. 'Only God can save this place. The condition is such that one good rain will be enough to flood the are,' Goel added. His accusations are not baseless.

NDMC areas have reported the maximum number of cases of water logging in the little rain that the city has received so far this year. As per the data provided by the corporation all the 10 water logging complaints were received from the Rohini Zone of the NDMC area. The worst affected areas are Rohini sectors 8 and 19, Buddh Vihar, and Shalimar Bagh. The corporation has also identified 52 vulnerable points of which 12 are in Rohini, 9 in City zone, 3 in Narela, 12 in Sadar Paharganj zone, 7 in Karolbagh, and 19 in Civil Lines zone.

'MCD employees come to clear the garbage, but they hardly ever remove the silt from the drains. If they do, they leave the garbage and silt along roadside and with time, it again flows back in to the drains,' said Ram Avtar Tiwari, a resident of Budh Vihar. The residents are also surprised how the NDMC officials could award themselves 'full mark' on its de-silting and cleaning drive as part of their pre-monsoon preparation. The drains of the colonies in the area are filled with garbage and poly-bags and nearing overflow. So bad is the condition of drainage in the area, that Gajender Yadav, another resident, said, 'The area would have become a pond by now had the rains come on time.'

The corporation claims however, to have removed 7693 metric tonnes of silt and cleaned drains that add up to 1526 km in length.

The corporation has also supposedly made arrangements for 18 pump houses and 183 portable pumps to pump out water from water logged areas.
