The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has yet again pushed for the shifting of Narela Grain Market to another location, away from residential area where traders and farmers can do business without the risk of crops getting damaged.
Currently, the grain market in Narela operates from around 33 acres of land. This space is not enough for all the traders to do business; they are forced to sell their produce from roads and from other open spaces such as parks located in the vicinity. This, of course, causes substantial inconvenience to both the traders as well as the local people.
Further, the farm produce also gets damaged due to rains. The farmers often complain that there is no provision to protect their food grains from being damaged.
‘We do not have enough space in our godowns to store the produce. The food grains are damaged every year, especially during the peak season, resulting in huge losses to all the fellow farmers and their families’, said farmer Jagjivan Ram.
Mohan Bhardwaj, chairman of standing committee at NDMC, said that he has been writing to the Delhi government to take note of the matter and shift the market at the earliest to protect further damage. ‘For many years now, I have been asking the Delhi government to do the needful but it is yet to respond to the appeals’, said Bhardwaj.
He said that the NDMC has proposed to shift the market to a larger area near NH1 on Delhi-Haryana border. ‘There is plenty of land available in Ghoga, Lampur and Bakner which will be convenient to the farmers due to its proximity with Haryana. The proposed area is also closer to the existing market’, he said.
He also believed that since the site of the existing market is a residential region, it should therefore be utilized only for housing purposes.
