NDA to raise Assam, power failure in House

The opposition BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will raise the ethnic violence in Assam in which over 50 people have died, the massive electricity failure and the flood and drought situation in the country among other issues during the monsoon session of parliament that begins Wednesday.

‘Ethnic violence in Kokrajhar (Assam), flood and drought situation in various states in the country, exorbitant increase in fertilizer prices,’ Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sabha Sushma Swaraj said in her tweets.

‘Failure of 3 power grids simultaneously, centre state relations, plight of handloom weavers, draft National Water Policy 2012.

‘I will also raise the issue of kidnapping/missing children in the country,’ Swaraj said.

Ethnic violence in Kokrajhar in Assam has claimed 56 lives so far and displaced over four lakh people.

Last Monday, 370 million people lost power for hours when the northern grid collapsed and the following day, 620 million had no electricity after the northern, eastern and northeastern grids collapsed.

‘ENCOURAGE THE STATES TO INCREASE POWER GENERATION’

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna on Monday said that the Centre should encourage the states that have potential to increase power generation. ‘Uttarakhand has capacity to generate 27,000 MW power but presently it is generating only 3,400 MW,’ he said and added several hydro-power projects in the State had been stalled by the Centre due to which the State was generating insignificant amount of power compared to its potential. Bahuguna was speaking at the meeting of power ministers of northern states at Habitat Centre in New Delhi on Monday.

Uttarakhand chief minister insisted that states should follow the set norms of the power grid so that the grid failure that took place on 30 and 31 July do not get repeated. He said that the problem caused by over-drawing of power had maligned the image of the country. Union Power Minister M Veerappa Moily urged the states to follow their respective norms so that incident of grid failures do not occur in future again, and he expected from the states that in case of failure, all the states take preventive measures together. The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for Power KC Venugopal, Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and power ministers and representatives of Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh.
