A building at the National Council Educational Research Training (NCERT) campus will be known as Dr Janaki Ammal block, named after an eminent scientist.
Union HRD Minister, Pallam Raju renamed the NCERT building housing the Department of Education in Science and Mathematics. Raju also launched the NCERT flag.
Janaki Ammal, a renowned botanist and plant cytologist, was the first woman scientist in the country to get Ph D and was born in Kerala in 1897.
While addressing the NCERT fraternity, Raju said, ‘NCERT is an important constituent in shaping the education in the country, you (NCERT academics) set the standards of how children study.’
He also said, ‘The ministry is looking at forming the new education commission. Once that is constituted, recommendations will follow and we all will have to get attuned to that.’
Faculty members of the council told the minister of their concerns such as corporal punishment, not enough being done for making the schools disabled friendly and granting of Institute of National Importance status to NCERT.
Raju, responding to these concerns, said, ‘There is an urgent need to sensitise and train every teacher for being empathetic to the cause of differently-abled children.’ He also stressed on adequate toilets for female students.
