National capital expects relief from Union Budget

As the nation awaits the BJP-led government’s maiden budget, Delhiites, reeling under their President’s rule, have their own expectations. Speculation suggests that the government might increase budget for the national capital by 10 per cent. The city has witnessed major electricity cuts following the dust storm on 30 May and it awaits a strong power distribution system. Power minister Piyush Goyal had to personally intervene to resolve the issue. The central government is likely to allot extra budget to permanently resolve these problems.

The government priority is to make the national capital a world class city and to achieve that they have planned a revival  of the Yamuna River. The previous government had made tall claims in this regard, though eventually nothing was done. A lot of expenditure will be required to expedite the process. The government will allocate special budget package in this regard. However, before doing so, they have to construct water treatment plants across the city and that needs huge investments. The government may also allocate extra budget for establishing a sewage network across the city.  Currently, only 40 per cent of the city has access to the sewage system.

The government’s focus will also include beautification projects and it might allocate approximately 20 crore for renovation of various monuments, which are in shambles. Commuting within the city and between satellite towns is a major problem the common man faces every day. People expect better connectivity between Delhi and neighbouring cities. The government is expected begin the fourth phase of metro rail construction. The detail project report has already been submitted and the government is likely to approve it. The government is also going to start the mono rail project, lying unattended by the previous government, in a phased manner. Security has been a major issue in the national capital, especially women. To make the city safer, the government will establish a special focus on strengthening the law enforcement agency, namely the Delhi police.
