Women, child trafficking cases rose by 3,773 in 2016

Following the 19,223 cases of women and child trafficking registered in 2015, the Minister for Women and Child Development in Rajya Sabha on Thursday stated that 3,773 more women and children went missing in 2016 than the previous year. Also, the majority of those missing are yet to be tracked.
Jharkhand has marked an improved in relation to women trafficking as the number of cases fell from 162 in 2015 to 130 in 2016. Also, child kidnapping trickled down to 90 in 2016 from 198 in 2015.
"We are implementing the Ujjawala scheme which will work towards the rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration of trafficking victims," said Maneka Gandhi, Minister for WCD.
The following states- Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal have collectively registered 65 percent women and 68 percent child trafficking cases in India.
The women trafficking cases have risen steeply from 44 in 2015 to 176 in 2016. Also, 83 child kidnapping cases were recorded in 2016 against 66 in 2015.
In Gujarat alone, 460 women and 485 children went missing in 2016 while the numbers are 975 women and 2519 children in Rajasthan. The bordering states of West Bengal have been registered with 3559 cases and 3113 cases of women trafficking and child kidnapping respectively.
