Darjeeling: Finally there is good news for the districts of North Bengal reeling under severe heat conditions. The weather office forecast states that weather conditions are all set to improve from Monday evening with most of the districts to witness rainfall.

For the past few weeks North Bengal districts have been witnessing an all time high temperatures with near nil rainfall. A dry spell has hit the Darjeeling Hills and Kalimpong district with temperatures soaring considerably.

"This is owing to intra seasonal variation and is normal. The prevailing condition is owing to the east end of the monsoon trough deviating southward and a low pressure area building up in the coastal region of Odisha. This is resulting in temperatures shooting up by more than 5 degrees in many places in North Bengal. Owing to the atmosphere still retaining the moisture from heavy rains in June, the climate is hot and humid, causing discomfort. However weather conditions are all set to improve from Monday evening," stated Dr Gopinath Raha of Indian Meteorological Department, Gangtok.

Siliguri recorded a temperature of 37.2 degree C ; Darjeeling 25.6 degree C and Kalimpong a high of 31 degree C. All the three places had no rainfall at all. In Darjeeling clear blue skies and the majestic Kanchenjunga have been greeting the tourists during the past few days. "We have never witnessed such weather in July when rains just don't stop in the Hills. It's been days that it has rained. Though it's great for the tourists, we are worried that we will have a drinking water crisis as rains replenish the groundwater," stated Arun Mukhia, a local resident.
