TMC to issue show-cause notice to its RS member

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress will send a show-cause notice to its Rajya Sabha member Kanwar Deep Singh over his absence during the voting of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 on Wednesday. Though a whip was issued in the Upper House by the chief whip of the party Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, Singh was missing from the important session on December 11, 2019.

Sources said, Roy will send the notice to KD Singh on Monday, seeking his reply and explanation within the first week of January 2020. Singh's term is going to end in the first week of April 2020 as the RS member. Though he represents TMC in Rajya Sabha, since 2017, but over a year he has been maintaining distance from the party activities.

Reportedly, the businessman-turned-politician also alleged to have funded around Rs 80 lakh to Matthew Samuel for the Narada sting operation which videotaped several high-ranking politicians accepting cash-bribes in exchange for providing unofficial favours to a company.

However, Singh has denied any such involvement.

Other Rajya Sabha members –Manish Gupta (TMC), Jogen Chowdhury (TMC) and Ahmed Hassan Imran (TMC) are also going to retire in the coming year as Rajya Sabha members from West Bengal. Manish Gupta was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on March 10, 2017, after the seat had fallen vacant following the resignation of Mithun Chakraborty.

Ahmed Hassan Imran had sworn into the Parliament on June 9, 2014, and Jogen Chowdhury was elected as a member of Rajya Sabha from Trinamool Congress on April 3, 2014.

During the recent Winter Session, TMC took part in the 'Zero Hour' around 58 hours in both the Houses of Parliament and raised important issues, viz, price hike, unemployment, the role of Governor etc. Further, the party claimed that not a single amendment by opposition parties on dozens of Bills was passed by the government.
