shimla: Choosing the auspicious day of ‘Mahashivratri’ and Sanskrit as the language for taking oath, former Union Minister of State (Finance) Shiv Pratap Shukla on Saturday took oath as the 29th Governor of Himachal Pradesh.

Before taking oath, Shukla performed ‘yojana’ along with his family members.

He has replaced Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar who since has been shifted to Bihar as the Governor. Shukla was administered the oath of office and secrecy by acting Chief Justice of the High Court Sabina at the Raj Bhavan in a simple but impressive ceremony. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri besides his cabinet ministers were also present at the swearing-in ceremony. Later, interacting with the media, the Governor said that it was a high constitutional post and he would work in coordination with the state government. Expressing gratitude to the President for his appointment, the Governor said that he would work in accordance with the Constitution and complete the work started by previous governors. He also said Himachal Pradesh is a leading state in the field of education and now he would contribute towards quality education.

He said that he would prefer to travel by road so that he could know the problems of the people and understand the state well. On taking oath in sanskrit, the Governor said, “Sanskrit is the mother of all languages and I have taken this ritual forward by taking oath in Devbhasha in Devbhoomi.”

He said that he would complete the works started by the previous governors and would also urge the Chief Minister to cooperate in completing those works on priority. He said that Himachal Pradesh is a leading state in the field of education and now he would contribute towards quality education. Shukla said that he would travel most of the time by road only so that he could know the problems of the people and understand Himachal more closely.

A resident of Rudrapur in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, Shukla started his political journey from RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
