Prez to declare 4 nominated RS members on July 15

New Delhi: Intense lobbying for getting nominated to Rajya Sabha through the nomination route is likely to be over on July 15, as the President House will declare names of nominees on that day.

Four seats got vacated after the retirement of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, veteran actress Rekha, social activist Anu Aga and veteran lawyer K. Parasaran in April.

Meanwhile, the BJP could raise its strength by four nominated candidates. However, the fate of the fifth vacant seat will be decided by the Supreme Court, which is hearing a petition filed by rebel JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav.

Though they will come under the quota of Presidential nomination, the President goes by the recommendation of the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Article 80 of the Constitution of India has rules regarding a number of members and method of their nomination and election to Rajya Sabha, "The President can nominate 12 members to the Rajya Sabha. These nominated members must be distinguished personalities in the field of Literature, Science, Art and Social Service. The President of India is advised by the Cabinet in this matter."
